For close to twenty-five years, Collins Street has hosted Credo Cafe, a place of neighbourhood hospitality at its back door. Entered off Baptist Place, Credo has been the gift of Urban Seed to those of our neighbours who are struggling and has provided both food and community to a wide range of people.
Responding to changes in the city while continuing our commitment to nurturing a neighbourhood that is both welcoming and inclusive, we have begun a process of revisioning our use of the Credo space as the Green Room. Home to Urban Seedlings, the Green Room will be an urban farm and placemaking project that educates, empowers and cultivates community around plant propagation and indoor food production. Still in its early stages of development, Urban Seedlings has three goals:
(a) to cultivate a sense of place that is inclusive to all with a special concern for those experiencing disadvantage;
(b) to educate and demonstrate the benefits of indoor plants and sustainable, locally-produced food to both people and place; and
(c) to inspire neighbourhood and placemaking through the creation of similar systems throughout Melbourne.
